How to check Tesla battery health
What Tesla actually shows you about battery health, what it leaves out, and how to track your real capacity and degradation over time.
What Tesla shows you today
Tesla's own touchscreen and app don't give you a dedicated "battery health" percentage the way a phone does. What you get instead is an estimated range number and a rated range figure buried in the software settings, plus whatever you can infer from watching how far a full charge actually takes you. That's useful information, but it's a single snapshot — it doesn't show you a trend, and it doesn't separate "the battery degraded" from "it's cold today" or "I've been driving faster than usual." Range on any given day is affected by temperature, speed, elevation, tire pressure, and driving style, so a single low-range day tells you very little on its own.
Why a one-time check isn't enough
Battery capacity is the more meaningful number to track, and capacity only becomes visible over multiple charges, not one. Every EV battery loses some capacity over time — this is normal chemistry, not a defect — and the pattern is well understood in general terms: most of the loss tends to happen earlier in a battery's life, with the rate slowing down and the curve flattening out as the pack settles. But the exact shape of that curve varies by car, climate, and how it's charged and used, so there's no single percentage that applies to every Tesla. That's exactly why a running log of your own numbers matters more than any generic chart you'll find online.
A practical way to check it yourself
- Charge to the same rough level each time you check, ideally at home on AC power rather than a Supercharger, so you're comparing similar sessions to each other.
- Note the energy added and the resulting range or percentage shown on the screen — over weeks and months, a consistent shrinking gap between "energy in" and "range gained" is a much stronger signal than any single reading.
- Avoid drawing conclusions from short trips or extreme weather. Cold batteries temporarily hold and deliver less usable range; that's a temperature effect, not permanent degradation, and it reverses once the battery warms up.
- Track it over months, not days. Meaningful degradation shows up as a slow trend across many charges — a single day's number, high or low, doesn't tell you much on its own.
